Lead
Lead (Pb)
Lead (IPA: /lɛd/), from the Old English lēad, is a heavy metal that is denser than most common materials. It is a chemical element with the symbol Pb (from the Latin plumbum) and atomic number 82.
Etymology
The word "lead" is derived from the Old English word lēad and the Proto-Germanic *laudą. The Latin word for lead, plumbum, is the origin of the English words "plumbing" and "plumb" (as in "plumb line").
Medical Significance
Lead has several medical implications. Lead poisoning is a medical condition caused by increased levels of lead in the body. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, constipation, headaches, irritability, memory problems, inability to have children, and tingling in the hands and feet. It causes almost 10% of intellectual disability of otherwise unknown cause and can result in behavioral problems.
