John Ruskin (8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) was an influential English art critic, social thinker, poet, and artist. Early Life

John Ruskin was born in London, the only child of Margaret and John James Ruskin, a wealthy sherry merchant. His early education was provided at home, where he was exposed to a wide range of literature, including the works of Shakespeare, Virgil, and the Bible. This early exposure to literature and art profoundly influenced Ruskin's later work and writings.

Career

Ruskin's career began with the publication of the first volume of Modern Painters (1843), a work that argued the superiority of the Romantic artists, particularly J.M.W. Turner. His work was notable for its emphasis on the connections between nature, art, and society. Ruskin believed that the observation of nature was a key part of understanding art, and he encouraged artists to study the natural world in detail.

Throughout his career, Ruskin wrote extensively on a variety of subjects, including architecture, geology, botany, and political economy. His works, such as The Stones of Venice (1851-1853) and Unto This Last (1860), critiqued the industrialization of the 19th century and advocated for a more humane and socially responsible approach to economics.

Influence

Ruskin's ideas had a significant impact on the Victorian and Edwardian societies. His advocacy for the importance of beauty, craftsmanship, and moral value in work influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement and later the Labour Movement. Ruskin also founded the Guild of St George, a communal experiment aimed at promoting his ideals of beauty, craftsmanship, and community living.

Legacy

John Ruskin's legacy is vast and varied. He is remembered not only for his contributions to art criticism and social theory but also for his influence on the environmental movement, urban planning, and education. Ruskin College in Oxford and the Ruskin School of Art bear his name, continuing his educational ideals.
