Artist
Artist
Artist (/ˈɑːrtɪst/; from the Latin artifex, meaning "craftsman") is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse refers to a practitioner in the visual arts only. However, the term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors).
Etymology
The word artist comes from the Latin artifex, which means "craftsman". This term was used in the Middle Ages to refer to a person skilled in any craft. In the Renaissance, the term began to be used specifically for those who created works of art.
