West Java

West Java is a province in Indonesia. It is located in the western part of the island of Java and its capital and largest urban area is Bandung. The province's population is approximately 49.5 million, making it the most populous province in Indonesia.

Geography

West Java borders Jakarta and Banten province to the west, and Central Java to the east. To the north is the Java Sea. To the south is the Indian Ocean. The province includes the Sundanese islands of Karimunjawa, located in the Java Sea, and the Seribu Islands on the northern coast of Jakarta.

History

The history of West Java is a part of the history of Indonesia. The region was a part of the ancient Sundanese kingdom of Tarumanagara, one of the oldest Hindu kingdoms in Indonesia. The later kingdoms of Sunda and Galuh were located in West Java.

Culture

The Sundanese people, the native ethnic group in West Java, are known for their distinct culture which differs from the Javanese culture. The Sundanese language, arts, and traditions are preserved in West Java.

Economy

West Java's economy is mainly based on industry and agriculture. The province is one of the largest contributors to Indonesia's GDP, with a significant portion coming from the industrial sector. Major industries include automotive, electronics, textile, and food processing.

Tourism

West Java is home to a number of tourist destinations, including the city of Bandung, known for its colonial architecture and culinary scene, and the Pangandaran beach resort.
