Syfy is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned by the NBCUniversal Television and Streaming division of NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. The channel primarily broadcasts science fiction, fantasy, horror, and supernatural programming.
History
Syfy was launched on September 24, 1992, as the Sci-Fi Channel. The channel was founded by Mitchell Rubenstein and Laurence Case. In 1999, the channel was acquired by USA Networks, which was later acquired by Vivendi Universal in 2002. In 2004, Vivendi Universal sold its entertainment assets to NBC, forming NBC Universal.
On July 7, 2009, the channel was rebranded as Syfy, a move intended to broaden the channel's appeal and to trademark the name. The rebranding was met with mixed reactions from fans and critics.
Programming
Syfy's programming includes a mix of original series, acquired series, and feature films. Notable original series include Stargate SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, Warehouse 13, and The Expanse. The channel also airs a variety of science fiction films, fantasy films, and horror films.
