DreamWorks Animation
DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (DWA) is an American animation studio that is a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, a division of NBCUniversal, which is itself a division of Comcast. DreamWorks Animation is known for producing high-quality animated feature films, television series, and online virtual worlds. The studio has released a number of critically acclaimed and commercially successful animated features, including the Shrek series, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon.
History
DreamWorks Animation was founded in 1994 as part of DreamWorks SKG by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen (forming the "SKG" in the company's name). Initially, the studio was formed to produce both live-action and animated films. However, in 2004, DreamWorks Animation was spun off as a separate company and went public.
In 2013, the company diversified its products and services by acquiring AwesomenessTV, a YouTube channel aimed at teenagers, and by launching DreamWorksTV, a family-oriented YouTube channel. DreamWorks Animation continued to expand its footprint in the entertainment industry by entering into various strategic partnerships and agreements to distribute its content across multiple platforms worldwide.
In 2016, NBCUniversal, a division of Comcast, acquired DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion, making it a part of the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. This acquisition aimed to strengthen NBCUniversal's presence in the family and youth entertainment sectors.
Productions
DreamWorks Animation has been recognized for its innovation in the field of animation. The studio was one of the pioneers in using computer-generated animation, with its first fully computer-animated feature, Antz, released in 1998. Following the success of Antz, DreamWorks Animation released what would become one of its most beloved franchises, Shrek, in 2001. Shrek not only won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature but also established DreamWorks Animation as a major competitor in the animation industry.
Over the years, DreamWorks Animation has produced a wide range of animated feature films, including both original stories and adaptations of popular children's literature. The studio has also ventured into television, creating animated series based on its popular film franchises, as well as original content.
Technology and Innovation
DreamWorks Animation has been at the forefront of animation technology, developing proprietary software for creating its films. One of the studio's notable technological achievements is the development of the animation software, MoonRay, which allows for more sophisticated lighting and rendering techniques in its productions.
Impact and Legacy
DreamWorks Animation has had a significant impact on the animation industry and popular culture. Its films are known for their humor, heart, and the quality of animation. The studio has received numerous awards for its work, including several Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Annie Awards.
The success of DreamWorks Animation's films has also led to the creation of numerous merchandise lines, theme park attractions, and live entertainment shows, further cementing the studio's influence in the entertainment landscape.
