Fantasy (pronunciation: /ˈfæntəsi/ or /fænˈtæzi/) is a genre of speculative fiction involving magical elements, typically set in a fictional universe, and often inspired by mythology and folklore. Its roots are in oral traditions, which then became literature and drama.

Etymology

The term "fantasy" comes from the Greek word "phantasia", which means "to make visible, to place before the eyes, to show". It was first used in English literature in the 14th century to describe a fantastical or unreal situation.
