Activation syndrome (pronunciation: ak-ti-va-shun sin-drohm) is a medical condition that is often associated with the use of certain types of antidepressant medications, particularly SSRIs and SNRIs.

Etymology

The term "activation syndrome" is derived from the word "activation", which refers to the process of making something active or operative, and "syndrome", a Greek word that means "concurrence of symptoms", or "things running together".

Definition

Activation syndrome is characterized by a group of symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, agitation, insomnia, irritability, mania, hypomania, suicidal ideation, and panic attacks. These symptoms can occur in patients who are starting or increasing the dosage of certain antidepressant medications.
