Zero-COVID

Zero-COVID (pronounced: /ˈziːroʊ ˈkoʊvɪd/) is a strategy aimed at completely eliminating the COVID-19 virus within a specific geographic area. The term is derived from the English words "zero", meaning none or nil, and "COVID", an abbreviation for the Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Etymology

The term "Zero-COVID" is a compound word. The first part, "zero", originates from the Old Italian "zefiro", which was borrowed from Arabic "sifr", meaning empty or nothing. The second part, "COVID", is an acronym that stands for "Coronavirus Disease 2019". The term was coined to describe the strategy of completely eliminating the COVID-19 virus.
