World of Darkness

World of Darkness is a gothic-punk horror fictional universe created by White Wolf Publishing. It serves as the setting for a series of interconnected role-playing games (RPGs), novels, and other media. The universe is characterized by its dark, brooding atmosphere and themes of personal horror, where supernatural creatures such as vampires, werewolves, and mages exist in a world that mirrors our own but is filled with hidden dangers and ancient conspiracies.
History[edit]
The World of Darkness was first introduced in 1991 with the release of the role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade. The success of this game led to the creation of additional RPGs set in the same universe, including Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Wraith: The Oblivion, and Changeling: The Dreaming. Each game explores different aspects of the supernatural world and its inhabitants.
In 2004, White Wolf Publishing rebooted the World of Darkness with a new series of games, starting with Vampire: The Requiem. This new iteration, often referred to as the "New World of Darkness" or "Chronicles of Darkness," features updated rules and a reimagined setting.
Setting[edit]
The World of Darkness is a reflection of the real world, but with a darker, more sinister tone. It is a place where supernatural beings hide in the shadows, influencing human society from behind the scenes. The setting is known for its complex mythology and intricate political structures among the various supernatural factions.
Supernatural Creatures[edit]
- Vampires: Known as Kindred, they are immortal beings who must feed on blood to survive. They are governed by a strict set of rules known as the Masquerade, which ensures their existence remains hidden from humans.
- Werewolves: Referred to as Garou, they are shape-shifters who protect the natural world from spiritual corruption. They are organized into tribes and follow a spiritual path known as the Litany.
- Mages: Humans who have awakened to the ability to manipulate reality through magic. They are divided into various Traditions and Orders, each with its own philosophy and goals.
- Wraiths: Spirits of the dead who linger in the Underworld. They are bound by their Passions and Fetters, which tie them to the living world.
- Changelings: Mortals who have been infused with fae essence, giving them magical abilities and a connection to the Dreaming.
Media[edit]
The World of Darkness has expanded beyond RPGs into other forms of media, including novels, comic books, and video games. Notable video games set in the World of Darkness include Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines and Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood.
