Mokolé are a fictional race of shapeshifters in the World of Darkness role-playing game series, primarily featured in the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse. They are one of the Changing Breeds, a group of creatures that can transform between human and animal forms. The Mokolé are unique among the Changing Breeds as they can shift into reptilian forms, specifically those of dinosaurs and other ancient reptiles.

Overview

The Mokolé are known as the "Memory of Gaia," serving as living repositories of the world's history. They possess the ability to access ancestral memories, which they call the "Mnesis." This allows them to recall events from the distant past, including the time of the dinosaurs. The Mokolé are deeply connected to the Umbra, the spirit world, and often serve as guardians of ancient knowledge and lore.

Forms

Mokolé have several forms they can shift into, similar to the Garou (werewolves). These forms include:

  • Homid: The human form.
  • Suchid: The reptilian form, which can range from small lizards to massive dinosaurs.
  • Archid: A hybrid form that combines human and reptilian features.
  • Darchid: A war form that is a more monstrous version of the Archid form.

Tribes

Mokolé are divided into various tribes, each with its own unique characteristics and cultural practices. Some of the notable tribes include:

  • Mokolé-Mbembe: Found primarily in Africa, they are known for their connection to the Nile River and ancient Egyptian lore.
  • Makara: Native to India, they are associated with the Naga and other mythological serpents.
  • Kumoti: Inhabitants of the Americas, they are linked to the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations.

Abilities

Mokolé possess several unique abilities, including:

  • Mnesis: The ability to access ancestral memories.
  • Sun Gifts: Powers granted by the Sun, which is a significant spiritual symbol for the Mokolé.
  • Regeneration: The ability to heal rapidly from injuries.

Role in the World of Darkness

In the World of Darkness, the Mokolé play a crucial role in preserving the history and knowledge of the world. They often act as advisors and historians to other Changing Breeds and supernatural beings. Their deep connection to the past makes them valuable allies in the fight against the forces of the Wyrm, the embodiment of corruption and decay.
