Wolverine (born James Howlett, commonly known as Logan) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, primarily in association with the X-Men. He is a mutant who possesses animal-keen senses, enhanced physical capabilities, a powerful regenerative ability known as a healing factor, and three retractable claws in each hand. Wolverine has been depicted variously as a member of the X-Men, Alpha Flight, and the Avengers.

Publication history

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180 (cover-dated October 1974) and was created by Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and John Romita Sr.. The character became a breakout star of the X-Men series and has since appeared in numerous solo and team books.

Fictional character biography

Early life

James Howlett was born in late 19th century Canada to rich farm owners John and Elizabeth Howlett. However, it was later revealed that his biological father was the Howletts' groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. After the traumatic death of his parents, James fled and adopted the name "Logan."

Weapon X

Logan was later abducted by a secret Canadian government program known as Weapon X, where he was subjected to experiments that bonded the indestructible metal adamantium to his skeleton. This process also enhanced his mutant healing factor.

X-Men

Logan was recruited by Professor X to join the X-Men, a team of mutants who fight for peace and equality between humans and mutants. He became one of the team's most prominent members and has had numerous adventures with them.

Other affiliations

In addition to the X-Men, Wolverine has been a member of Alpha Flight, a Canadian superhero team, and the Avengers. He has also been part of the covert team X-Force, which undertakes missions requiring a more lethal approach.

Powers and abilities

Wolverine's primary mutant power is his healing factor, which allows him to recover from virtually any wound, disease, or toxin at an accelerated rate. This ability also slows his aging process, making him appear much younger than he actually is. His senses are enhanced to superhuman levels, and he possesses superhuman strength, agility, and reflexes. Wolverine's skeleton, including his retractable claws, is coated with adamantium, making them virtually indestructible.

Wolverine is one of the most popular and iconic characters in the Marvel Universe. He has appeared in various media adaptations, including animated television series, video games, and live-action films. Hugh Jackman famously portrayed Wolverine in the X-Men film series.
