Wife (/waɪf/), from the Old English wīf, is a term used to refer to a married woman in relation to her spouse.

Etymology

The term "wife" originates from the Old English wīf, which is of Germanic origin. The word is related to the Dutch wijf and German Weib. The original meaning of the word was simply "woman", but it has since evolved to specifically refer to a woman in a marital relationship.

Definition

A wife is a female partner in a continuing marital relationship. The term continues to be applied to a woman who has separated from her partner and ceases to be applied to such a woman only when her marriage has come to an end following a legally recognized divorce or the death of her spouse.
