Vacation (pronunciation: /vəˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/), also known as holiday in some regions, is a term used to describe a period of time in which an individual takes a break from their regular work or school activities to rest, relax, and often travel. The term originates from the Latin word "vacatio", which means "freedom, release".

The term "vacation" is derived from the Latin "vacatio", which means "leisure, freedom, exemption, a being free from duty, immunity earned by service". It was first used in the English language in the 14th century to denote a "respite from something".
