Turtles are a brand of chocolate confectionery that are made with pecans and caramel, covered in milk chocolate. They are produced by DeMet's Candy Company. The name "Turtles" is derived from the shape of the candy, which resembles a turtle with a shell.

History

The Turtles brand was created in 1918 by Johnson's Candy Company. The original recipe was developed by a candy maker named George DeMet, who later founded DeMet's Candy Company. The unique combination of pecans, caramel, and chocolate quickly became popular, and the brand has been a staple in the confectionery market ever since.

Production

Turtles are made by placing a cluster of pecans on a conveyor belt, which is then covered with a dollop of caramel. The caramel and pecans are then enrobed in milk chocolate, creating the distinctive turtle shape. The process requires precise temperature control to ensure the caramel is soft and the chocolate coating is smooth.

Varieties

While the original Turtles are made with milk chocolate, there are several variations available, including dark chocolate and white chocolate versions. Some variations also include additional ingredients such as sea salt or different types of nuts.

Cultural Impact

Turtles have become a popular gift item, especially during the holiday season. They are often included in gift baskets and are a common treat for special occasions. The brand has maintained its popularity over the years due to its unique flavor combination and nostalgic appeal.
