Triceps Reflex
The Triceps Reflex (pronounced: TRY-seps REE-flex), also known as the C7 reflex, is a reflex that is elicited by the sudden stretching of the triceps brachii muscle in the upper arm.
Etymology
The term "triceps" is derived from the Latin words "tri" meaning "three" and "ceps" meaning "head", referring to the three-headed muscle in the upper arm. The term "reflex" is derived from the Latin "reflexus", meaning "bent back", referring to the automatic response of the body to certain stimuli.
Procedure
The Triceps Reflex is tested by striking the triceps tendon directly with a reflex hammer. This causes the triceps muscle to contract and the forearm to extend. It is a standard part of the neurological examination and is used to assess the integrity of the spinal cord at the level of the seventh cervical vertebra (C7).
Clinical Significance
An absent or diminished Triceps Reflex can indicate a lesion or damage at the C7 level of the spinal cord, or it could suggest a radiculopathy (a condition due to a compressed nerve in the spine). An exaggerated Triceps Reflex may suggest an upper motor neuron lesion.
