The Giant Company is a prominent American supermarket chain headquartered in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It operates stores under the names Giant, Martin's Foods, and Giant Heirloom Market. The company is a subsidiary of the Dutch conglomerate Ahold Delhaize.
History
The Giant Company was founded in 1923 by David Javitch in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Initially, it was a small meat market known as the Carlisle Meat Market. Over the years, the company expanded its operations and opened its first supermarket in 1936. The company continued to grow, acquiring other grocery chains and expanding its footprint across the Mid-Atlantic region.
In 1981, Giant was acquired by Royal Ahold, a Dutch retail conglomerate, which later became Ahold Delhaize after a merger with Delhaize Group in 2016. This acquisition allowed Giant to expand further and modernize its operations.
