Tert-Amyl alcohol (also known as 2-methylbutan-2-ol) is a type of alcohol with the chemical formula C5H12O. It is a colorless liquid that is used in various industrial applications, including as a solvent and as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals.
Chemical Properties
Tert-Amyl alcohol is a tertiary alcohol, which means it has three carbon atoms attached to the carbon atom that is bonded to the hydroxyl group. This structure makes it more resistant to oxidation than primary or secondary alcohols. It has a boiling point of 102.3 °C and a melting point of -9 °C.
Production
Tert-Amyl alcohol is produced industrially by the hydration of isobutene. This process involves the addition of water to isobutene in the presence of an acid catalyst, typically sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid. The resulting product is a mixture of tert-amyl alcohol and diisobutylene, which can be separated by distillation.
Uses
Tert-Amyl alcohol is primarily used as a solvent in the production of paints and varnishes. It is also used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals, such as plasticizers and resins. In addition, it is used in the manufacture of perfumes and flavorings due to its pleasant, fruity odor.
Safety
Tert-Amyl alcohol is flammable and can cause irritation to the eyes and skin. It is also harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Therefore, it should be handled with care and appropriate safety measures should be taken when using it.
