Talk:Bipolar

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes periods of depression and periods of abnormally elevated mood. The elevated mood is significant and is known as mania or hypomania, depending on its severity, or whether symptoms of psychosis are present. During mania, an individual behaves or feels abnormally energetic, happy, or irritable. Individuals often make poorly thought out decisions with little regard to the consequences.

Symptoms

The symptoms of bipolar disorder can vary. An individual with bipolar disorder may have manic episodes, depressive episodes, or "mixed" episodes. A mixed episode has both manic and depressive symptoms. These episodes may last a week or more and may be followed by a period of normal mood.

Causes

The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but several factors may be involved, such as biochemical imbalances in the brain, genetic factors, and environmental factors.

Treatment

Treatment for bipolar disorder often involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Medications used to treat bipolar disorder include mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and antidepressants.
