Stepmother
Stepmother
Stepmother (/ˈstɛpˌmʌðər/) is a term used to describe a woman who is the wife of one's father after the divorce of one's parents or the death of one's mother.
Etymology
The term "stepmother" comes from the Old English steopmodor, which is derived from steop- meaning "bereaved" and modor meaning "mother". The prefix steop- was used in Old English to denote relations resulting from a remarriage after the death of a spouse, not from divorce.
Definition
A stepmother is a woman who marries a person's father after the person's biological mother has died or the parents have divorced. She is not the biological mother of the person's children, but may take on the role of mother in the family structure.
