Etymology
The term "stepfather" comes from the Old English steopfæder. Steop can be traced back to the Proto-Germanic *steupa, and fæder is the Old English word for "father". The prefix steop was used in Old English to denote a relationship resulting from the remarriage of a widowed parent. It is equivalent to the Modern English "step-".
