Stepchild (/ˈstɛptʃaɪld/), from the Old English stēopcild, is a term used to describe a child who is the offspring of one's spouse or domestic partner from a previous relationship.
Etymology
The term "stepchild" originates from the Old English stēopcild, which is a compound of stēop- meaning "bereaved" and cild meaning "child". The term was used to refer to an orphan, but over time, its meaning has evolved to its current usage.
