Spouse
Spouse (/spaʊs/) is a term used to describe a partner in a marriage, civil union, domestic partnership or similar union. A spouse can be a husband, wife, or partner, regardless of gender.
Etymology
The term "spouse" comes from the Old French espous, from Latin sponsus, past participle of spondēre ('to bind oneself by oath'), which is the same root as "sponsor".
