Speķrauši
Speķrauši is a traditional Latvian dish, often referred to as Latvian bacon buns. The name Speķrauši is derived from the Latvian word speķis, meaning bacon, and rauši, meaning buns. This dish is a staple in Latvian households and is commonly served during special occasions and traditional Latvian festivals.
Ingredients and Preparation[edit]
The primary ingredients of Speķrauši are bacon, onion, black pepper, and rye or wheat flour. The bacon is diced into small pieces and mixed with finely chopped onions. This mixture is then seasoned with black pepper. The dough for the buns is made from either rye or wheat flour, with the bacon and onion mixture placed inside the dough before baking.
Cultural Significance[edit]
Speķrauši holds a significant place in Latvian culture. It is often served during traditional Latvian festivals such as Jāņi, the midsummer celebration, and Ziemassvētki, the winter solstice celebration. The dish is also a common feature in Latvian family gatherings and celebrations.
Variations[edit]
While the traditional Speķrauši recipe calls for bacon, onion, and black pepper, variations of the dish exist. Some recipes may include additional ingredients such as caraway seeds or garlic. The type of flour used can also vary, with some recipes using a mixture of rye and wheat flour.
