Significance

From WikiMD's WELLNESSPEDIA

Significance refers to the importance, relevance, or meaning of something, particularly in the context of statistics, where it denotes the probability that an observed result, such as a difference between two measurements, is caused by something other than random chance.

Statistical Significance[edit]

In statistics, significance is a measure of the probability that an observed difference in data is not due to random chance. This is often measured with a p-value, which represents the probability that the observed data (or data more extreme) could occur if the null hypothesis of no effect is true. If the p-value is below a certain threshold (often 0.05), the result is said to be statistically significant.

Philosophical Significance[edit]

In philosophy, significance can refer to the meaning or importance of a concept, argument, or discovery. This can be subjective and dependent on one's perspective or framework of understanding.

Clinical Significance[edit]

In medicine and psychology, clinical significance refers to the practical importance of a treatment effect—whether it has a real genuine, palpable, noticeable effect on daily life.
