Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is a prominent non-profit biomedical research institute located in La Jolla, California. It is renowned for its contributions to the fields of cancer research, neuroscience, immunology, and metabolic disorders.

History[edit]

The institute was founded in 1976 by Dr. William H. Fishman and his wife, Dr. Lillian Fishman, as the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation. The foundation was established with the mission to conduct basic research in the biological sciences and to apply these findings to the understanding and treatment of human diseases.

In 1996, the institute was renamed the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in honor of Malin Burnham, a prominent San Diego philanthropist who made significant contributions to the institute. In 2010, following a substantial donation from T. Denny Sanford, the institute was renamed Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. In 2015, the name was further updated to Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute after receiving a generous donation from Conrad Prebys.
