Definition

Empirical research is research using empirical evidence. It is a way of gaining knowledge by means of direct and indirect observation or experience. Empirical evidence (the record of one's direct observations or experiences) can be analyzed quantitatively or qualitatively.

Methodology

Empirical research can be categorized as either quantitative research or qualitative research. In quantitative research, empirical evidence is gathered through quantitative surveys, which are then statistically analyzed. In qualitative research, the methods include focus groups, in-depth interviews, and reviews of documents for types of themes.

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research is empirical research where the data are in the form of numbers. Quantitative research is used for testing and validating already constructed theories about how and why phenomena occur.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is empirical research where the data are not in the form of numbers. Qualitative research is used to understand concepts, thoughts or experiences.

Importance

Empirical research is extremely important to the progression of many fields, as it allows theories to be tested and assumptions to be challenged. It is the backbone of scientific research and is used in many other fields as well.
