Qualitative Research

Qualitative research (/kwɒlɪˈteɪtɪv rɪˈsɜːrtʃ/) is a method of inquiry employed in many different academic disciplines, traditionally in the social sciences, but also in market research and further contexts.

Etymology

The term "qualitative research" is derived from the quality-focused aspect of this type of research. The word "qualitative" comes from the Latin "qualitas," meaning "quality" or "character."

Definition

Qualitative research aims to gather an in-depth understanding of human behavior and the reasons that govern such behavior. The qualitative method investigates the why and how of decision making, not just what, where, when. Hence, smaller but focused samples are more often used than large samples.

Methodology

In the social sciences, qualitative research is a broad methodological approach that encompasses many research methods. The aim of qualitative research may vary with the disciplinary background, such as psychology, anthropology, social work, and sociology. Methods include ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology, and case study.
