Reovirus
Reovirus
Reovirus (/ˈriːoʊˌvaɪrəs/), short for respiratory enteric orphan virus, is a genus of double-stranded RNA viruses in the family Reoviridae.
Etymology
The term "Reovirus" is derived from Respiratory Enteric Orphan viruses. The term "orphan virus" was used because when these viruses were discovered, they were not associated with any known disease.
Structure
Reoviruses are non-enveloped viruses with an icosahedral capsid. The genome of the reovirus is segmented, consisting of 10-12 segments of double-stranded RNA.
Classification
Reoviruses are classified into the family Reoviridae, which is divided into two subfamilies: Sedoreovirinae and Spinareovirinae. The Reovirus genus belongs to the Spinareovirinae subfamily.
Pathogenesis
Reoviruses are typically benign pathogens in humans, but can cause severe disease in mice. They have been used extensively as a model organism in the study of viral pathogenesis.
