President

President (/prɛzɪdənt/; from Latin praesidere, "to sit before") is a common title for the head of state in most republics. The roles and responsibilities of a president can vary greatly depending on the country's form of government. In some countries, the president is the chief executive officer and has significant powers, while in others, the president is a ceremonial figurehead with little political power.

Etymology

The term president is derived from the Latin praesidere, which means "to sit before". This term was originally used to refer to the presiding officer of a meeting or assembly. It was first used to denote the head of state in the United States Constitution, which established the office of the President of the United States in 1787.
