Postpartum Infections

Postpartum infections, also known as Puerperal Infections (pronunciation: pyoor-puh-ruhl), are infections that occur after childbirth. The term "postpartum" comes from the Latin words "post" meaning "after" and "partum" meaning "birth".

Types of Postpartum Infections

There are several types of postpartum infections, including:

  • Endometritis (pronunciation: en-doh-muh-rye-tis): This is an infection of the lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium. It is the most common postpartum infection.
  • Wound Infections: These can occur at the site of a surgical incision, such as a Cesarean section (pronunciation: si-zair-ee-uhn sek-shuhn), or at the site of a perineal tear or episiotomy.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (pronunciation: yoo-rin-air-ee trakt in-fek-shuhns): These can occur in the bladder (cystitis) or kidneys (pyelonephritis).
  • Mastitis (pronunciation: mas-tye-tis): This is an infection of the breast tissue that results in breast pain, swelling, warmth and redness.

Causes

Postpartum infections are usually caused by bacteria that enter the body during childbirth. The most common bacteria involved are Group B Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Bacteroides species.

Symptoms

Symptoms of postpartum infections can include fever, chills, lower abdominal pain, and abnormal vaginal discharge. If you experience these symptoms, it is important to contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Treatment

Treatment for postpartum infections typically involves antibiotics. In some cases, hospitalization may be required.

Prevention

Prevention of postpartum infections can include proper hygiene during and after childbirth, prompt treatment of any infections that do occur, and prophylactic antibiotics for women at high risk.
