Pomonok, Queens
Pomonok is a residential neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located in the central part of the borough, bordered by Flushing to the north, Kew Gardens Hills to the west, Hillcrest to the south, and Fresh Meadows to the east. The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 8.
History
Pomonok derives its name from a Native American word meaning "land of tribute." The area was originally farmland before being developed into a residential neighborhood. The most notable development in Pomonok is the Pomonok Houses, a large public housing project built in the 1940s to provide affordable housing for returning World War II veterans and their families.
Geography
Pomonok is primarily a residential area with a mix of single-family homes, apartment buildings, and public housing. The neighborhood is characterized by its tree-lined streets and proximity to several parks, including Kissena Park and Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
Demographics
Pomonok is a diverse community with a population that includes a mix of ethnicities and cultures. The neighborhood has a significant number of Jewish residents, as well as communities of Asian, African, and Latino descent.

Pomonok is served by several public schools operated by the New York City Department of Education. Notable schools in the area include P.S. 201 The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research and J.H.S. 217 Robert A. Van Wyck. The neighborhood is also in close proximity to Queens College, a major institution of higher education.

Pomonok is accessible by several bus routes, including the Q25, Q34, Q44, and Q64. The nearest subway stations are located in nearby Flushing and Jamaica, providing residents with access to the 7 train and the E, F trains.
