Etymology
The term "polyurethane" is derived from the Greek words "poly" meaning many, and "urethane", a compound formed from carbamic acid and alcohol.
Description
Polyurethanes are formed by reacting a polyol (an alcohol with more than two reactive hydroxyl groups per molecule) with a diisocyanate or a polymeric isocyanate in the presence of suitable catalysts and additives. The properties of a polyurethane are greatly influenced by the types of isocyanates and polyols used to make it.
Applications
Polyurethane is used in many industries and can be found in a variety of products, including foams for furniture and bedding, insulation materials, surface coatings, and adhesives. It is also used in the manufacture of elastomers, sealants, and plastics.
