Polk County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,783. The county seat is Balsam Lake, and the largest city is Amery. The county was created in 1853 and organized in 1861. It is named after James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States.
History
Polk County was formed from portions of St. Croix County in 1853. It was named in honor of President James K. Polk, who served as president from 1845 to 1849. The county was fully organized in 1861, with Balsam Lake being designated as the county seat.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 956 square miles, of which 914 square miles is land and 42 square miles (4.4%) is water. The county is known for its scenic landscapes, which include rolling hills, lakes, and rivers. Major water bodies include the St. Croix River, which forms part of the western boundary of the county.
