Plasma cell granuloma
Plasma Cell Granuloma
Plasma cell granuloma (pronunciation: /ˈplazmə sɛl ˈɡranjʊˌloʊmə/) is a rare, benign tumor that is characterized by the proliferation of inflammatory cells, predominantly plasma cells.
Etymology
The term "plasma cell granuloma" is derived from the Greek words "plasma" (meaning "moldable substance"), "kytos" (meaning "cell"), and "granuloma" (meaning "small grain").
Description
Plasma cell granulomas are non-neoplastic, inflammatory lesions that can occur in various parts of the body, including the lungs, oral cavity, central nervous system, and skin. They are composed of a mixture of inflammatory cells, with a predominance of plasma cells. Despite their name, plasma cell granulomas are not true granulomas as they lack the typical granulomatous inflammation.
Symptoms
Symptoms of plasma cell granuloma can vary depending on the location of the lesion. In the lungs, symptoms may include cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath. In the oral cavity, the lesion may present as a painless, slow-growing mass.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of plasma cell granuloma is typically made through biopsy and histological examination. The lesion is characterized by a dense infiltrate of plasma cells, along with other inflammatory cells such as lymphocytes and eosinophils.
Treatment
Treatment for plasma cell granuloma usually involves surgical removal of the lesion. In some cases, corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory medications may be used to reduce inflammation.
Prognosis
The prognosis for individuals with plasma cell granuloma is generally good, as the lesion is benign and does not typically recur after removal. However, in rare cases, the lesion may become malignant.
