Periglomerular cell
Periglomerular cell
Periglomerular cells (pronunciation: per-i-glo-mer-u-lar cells) are a type of interneuron found in the olfactory bulb of the brain. They are named for their location surrounding the glomeruli in the olfactory bulb.
Etymology
The term "periglomerular" is derived from the Latin peri- meaning "around" or "surrounding", and glomerulus, a small intertwined group of capillaries. Thus, "periglomerular" refers to the cells' location surrounding the glomeruli in the olfactory bulb.
Function
Periglomerular cells play a crucial role in the processing of olfactory information. They receive input from olfactory receptor neurons and provide inhibitory feedback to these neurons, thereby modulating the olfactory signal before it is transmitted to higher brain regions.
