Pazinaclone

Pazinaclone is a sedative and anxiolytic drug in the cyclopyrrolone family of drugs. Other cyclopyrrolone drugs include such agents as zopiclone and eszopiclone. Pazinaclone has a similar pharmacological profile to the benzodiazepine drugs including sedative and anxiolytic properties, but with less amnestic effects, and it is used in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia.

Pharmacology

Pazinaclone produces its sedative and anxiolytic effects by binding to the GABA_A receptor, increasing the efficiency of GABA, the body's most prevalent inhibitory neurotransmitter. This results in increased chloride ion influx, hyperpolarisation of the neuron and reduced synaptic transmission, leading to the drug's sedative and anxiolytic effects.

Medical Uses

Pazinaclone is primarily used for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety. It is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic and is used as a sleep aid in the treatment of insomnia. It is also used as an anxiolytic in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Side Effects

Common side effects of pazinaclone include drowsiness, dizziness, and decreased alertness. Less common side effects include amnesia, hallucinations, and changes in behavior. Long-term use of pazinaclone can lead to drug tolerance and dependence.
