Panuveitis (pronounced: pan-u-vee-tis) is a medical condition that involves inflammation of the entire uveal tract of the eye, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid.

Etymology

The term "Panuveitis" is derived from the Greek words 'pan', meaning 'all', and 'uvea', referring to the middle layer of the eye, and the Latin suffix '-itis', which denotes inflammation.

Definition

Panuveitis is a form of uveitis, a group of inflammatory diseases that produce swelling and destroy eye tissues. Panuveitis is characterized by inflammation of all three major parts of the eye's uvea: the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. This condition can lead to severe vision loss or blindness.

Symptoms

Symptoms of panuveitis may include blurred vision, eye pain and redness, light sensitivity, and seeing floaters or flashes of light. The symptoms can occur in one or both eyes and may come on gradually or suddenly.

Causes

The exact cause of panuveitis is often unknown. However, it can be associated with systemic inflammatory disorders, infections, or it can be idiopathic (of unknown cause). Some known causes include sarcoidosis, Behcet's disease, and syphilis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of panuveitis involves a thorough examination of the eye by an ophthalmologist. This may include tests such as a slit lamp examination, fundoscopy, and ocular ultrasound. Blood tests and imaging may also be used to identify any underlying systemic disease.

Treatment

Treatment for panuveitis typically involves reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, preventing further tissue damage, and restoring any loss of vision. This may involve the use of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, or biologic therapies. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
