POU4F3

POU4F3 is a gene that encodes a member of the POU-domain family of transcription factors. POU-domain proteins have been observed to play important roles in control of cell identity in several systems. A class IV POU-domain protein, POU4F3 is involved in neurogenesis and development of the auditory system. Mutations in this gene have been associated with hearing loss.

Function

The POU4F3 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is found in the inner ear. This protein is a transcription factor, which means it attaches (binds) to specific regions of DNA and helps control the activity of certain genes. Mutations in the POU4F3 gene are associated with autosomal dominant non-syndromic sensorineural type 15 deafness (DFNA15). DFNA15 is a form of genetic deafness. This can disrupt the normal development and maintenance of hair cells, leading to their degeneration and resulting in progressive hearing loss.
