Outer Plexiform Layer

The Outer Plexiform Layer (OPL) (pronunciation: /ˈaʊtər plɛksɪfɔːrm ˈleɪər/) is a layer in the retina of the eye that plays a crucial role in visual processing.

Etymology

The term "Outer Plexiform Layer" is derived from the Latin words "plexus" meaning "braid" or "network", and "forma" meaning "shape" or "form". The term "layer" is derived from the Old English word "laeger", which means "a bed or stratum".

Function

The Outer Plexiform Layer is located between the inner nuclear layer and the outer nuclear layer in the retina. It is composed of the synapses between the dendrites of horizontal cells, bipolar cells, and the axons of photoreceptor cells. These synapses allow for the transmission of visual information from the photoreceptor cells to the bipolar cells, and then to the ganglion cells, which send the information to the brain via the optic nerve.
