Inner Nuclear Layer

The Inner Nuclear Layer (INL) (pronunciation: /ˈɪnər ˈnjuːkliər ˈleɪər/), is the third layer of the retina that is located closest to the center of the eye.

Etymology

The term "Inner Nuclear Layer" is derived from its location and composition. "Inner" refers to its position near the center of the eye, "Nuclear" refers to the presence of cell nuclei, and "Layer" indicates its stratified structure.

Structure

The Inner Nuclear Layer is composed of three types of cells: bipolar cells, horizontal cells, and amacrine cells. These cells play a crucial role in the processing of visual information.

  • Bipolar cells are the primary cells in the INL. They receive inputs from photoreceptor cells and transmit the information to the ganglion cells.
  • Horizontal cells help in the lateral inhibition process, which increases the contrast between light and dark areas in the visual field.
  • Amacrine cells are involved in the complex processing of visual information before it is transmitted to the brain.

Function

The primary function of the Inner Nuclear Layer is to process visual information received from the photoreceptor cells and transmit it to the ganglion cells. This layer plays a crucial role in the perception of light intensity, color, and contrast.

Related Terms

  • Retina: The light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye.
  • Photoreceptor cells: Specialized type of neuron found in the retina that is capable of phototransduction.
  • Bipolar cells: A type of neuron which has two extensions.
  • Horizontal cells: A type of neuron in the retina that laterally inhibits bipolar cells and photoreceptors.
  • Amacrine cells: A type of neuron in the retina that inhibits bipolar cells.
