Etymology
The term "oil pulling" comes from the process of the oil being "worked" in the mouth by pulling, pushing, and sucking it through the teeth.
Procedure
Oil pulling is typically done with sesame oil, coconut oil, or sunflower oil. A tablespoon of oil is swished around the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. It is then spit out and the mouth is rinsed thoroughly with water and then brushed.
Benefits
Oil pulling is believed to detoxify the oral cavity by pulling out toxins and bacteria, hence promoting oral hygiene. It can help to prevent tooth decay, gingivitis, and bad breath. It is also believed to help with tooth whitening.
