Major League Baseball franchise in Oakland, California

The Oakland Athletics, often referred to as the A's, are a professional baseball team based in Oakland, California. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. The team plays its home games at the Oakland Coliseum.

History

The franchise was founded in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics, one of the eight charter franchises of the American League. The team moved to Kansas City in 1955 and became the Kansas City Athletics, before relocating to Oakland in 1968.

Philadelphia Athletics (1901–1954)

The Athletics were established in Philadelphia in 1901. They were one of the original eight teams in the American League. The team was managed by Connie Mack for its first 50 years, during which they won five World Series championships (1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and 1930).

Kansas City Athletics (1955–1967)

In 1955, the team moved to Kansas City, where they played for 13 seasons. Despite the move, the team struggled to find success on the field and did not win any championships during this period.

Oakland Athletics (1968–present)

The Athletics moved to Oakland in 1968. The team found success in the early 1970s, winning three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 to 1974 under the ownership of Charlie Finley. The team won another World Series in 1989 under the management of Tony La Russa.

Ballpark

The Athletics have played their home games at the Oakland Coliseum since 1968. The stadium is shared with the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) until the Raiders' move to Las Vegas in 2020.

Team Colors and Mascot

The team's colors are green, gold, and white. The Athletics' mascot is an elephant named Stomper.

Championships

The Athletics have won a total of nine World Series championships, 15 American League pennants, and 17 division titles. They have also secured four wild card berths.
