The Minnesota Twins are an American professional baseball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. The team is named after the Twin Cities area comprising Minneapolis and St. Paul.
History
The franchise was founded in 1901 as the Washington Senators and was one of the eight original teams of the American League. The team relocated to Minnesota in 1961 and was renamed the Minnesota Twins.
Early Years in Washington
The Washington Senators struggled in their early years, often finishing near the bottom of the standings. However, the team saw success in the 1920s and 1930s, winning the World Series in 1924.
Move to Minnesota
In 1961, the franchise moved to Minnesota and became the Minnesota Twins. The team played its home games at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington until 1981, when they moved to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.
World Series Championships
The Twins have won three World Series championships: in 1924 (as the Washington Senators), 1987, and 1991. The 1991 World Series is often regarded as one of the greatest in baseball history, with the Twins defeating the Atlanta Braves in seven games.
Recent Years
In 2010, the Twins moved to their current home, Target Field, an open-air ballpark in the Warehouse District of downtown Minneapolis. The team has continued to compete in the AL Central division, winning several division titles in recent years.
