Nutriepigenomics (pronunciation: /nuː.triː.epiː.genˈoʊ.mɪks/) is a scientific discipline that studies the effects of nutrition and dietary components on the epigenome. The term is derived from the words "nutrition", "epigenetics", and "genomics".

Etymology

The term "Nutriepigenomics" is a portmanteau of three words: "Nutri" from Nutrition, "epi" from Epigenetics, and "genomics" from Genomics. Nutrition refers to the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Epigenetics is the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. Genomics is a discipline in genetics that applies recombinant DNA, DNA sequencing methods, and bioinformatics to sequence, assemble, and analyze the function and structure of genomes.

Overview

Nutriepigenomics is an emerging field in nutritional science that seeks to understand how diet influences gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms. These mechanisms include DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNA molecules. The field is based on the understanding that while our genetic code (our genome) is fixed, the way our genes are expressed can be altered by environmental factors, including diet.
