Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (pronounced: MYOO-kus MEM-brane PEM-fi-goid), also known as cicatricial pemphigoid or benign mucous membrane pemphigoid, is a rare chronic autoimmune disease that affects the mucous membranes of the body.

Etymology

The term "pemphigoid" is derived from the Greek word "pemphix", meaning "bubble or blister". "Cicatricial" is derived from the Latin word "cicatrix" which means "scar". The term "mucous membrane pemphigoid" therefore refers to a condition that causes blistering and scarring on the mucous membranes.

Definition

Mucous membrane pemphigoid is characterized by blistering lesions that occur primarily on the mucous membranes, although skin can also be affected. The most commonly involved sites are the oral cavity, eyes, nose, throat, genitalia, and anus.

Symptoms

Symptoms of mucous membrane pemphigoid include painful sores and blisters on the mucous membranes, scarring, and in severe cases, blindness or other complications due to scarring of the mucous membranes.

Causes

The exact cause of mucous membrane pemphigoid is unknown, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own cells.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of mucous membrane pemphigoid is typically made through a combination of clinical examination, patient history, and specialized tests such as biopsy and direct immunofluorescence.

Treatment

Treatment for mucous membrane pemphigoid is aimed at reducing symptoms and preventing complications. This may include medications to suppress the immune system, such as corticosteroids, and other treatments to manage symptoms.
