Morellino di Scansano
Morellino di Scansano is a red wine produced in the Maremma region of Tuscany, Italy. It is made primarily from the Sangiovese grape, which is locally known as "Morellino." The wine has been granted the status of Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), the highest classification for Italian wines.
History[edit]
The production of Morellino di Scansano dates back to ancient times, with evidence suggesting that the Etruscans were the first to cultivate vines in the region. The wine gained significant recognition in the 20th century and was awarded DOC status in 1978. In 2007, it was elevated to DOCG status, reflecting its high quality and the stringent regulations governing its production.
Production Area[edit]
The Morellino di Scansano production area is located in the province of Grosseto, in the southern part of Tuscany. The vineyards are situated on the hills surrounding the town of Scansano, benefiting from the region's favorable climate and soil conditions. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea provides a unique microclimate that contributes to the wine's distinctive characteristics.
Grape Varieties[edit]
Morellino di Scansano is made predominantly from the Sangiovese grape, which must constitute at least 85% of the blend. The remaining 15% can include other authorized red grape varieties such as Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Malvasia Nera, Alicante Bouschet, and Merlot.
Wine Characteristics[edit]
Morellino di Scansano is known for its vibrant ruby red color and its rich, fruity aroma with notes of red berries, cherries, and plums. The wine typically has a medium to full body, with balanced acidity and soft tannins. It is often described as having a smooth and elegant finish.
Aging Requirements[edit]
The regulations for Morellino di Scansano DOCG specify that the wine must be aged for a minimum of one year before release. There is also a "Riserva" designation for wines that have been aged for at least two years, with at least one year in oak barrels.
Food Pairing[edit]
Morellino di Scansano pairs well with a variety of dishes, including Tuscan cuisine, grilled meats, pasta with rich sauces, and aged cheeses. Its versatility makes it a popular choice for both casual and formal dining.
