Mohawk people
The Mohawk people (Kanienʼkehá꞉ka) are the most easterly tribe of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), an indigenous people of North America. They are an Indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands, predominantly inhabiting areas of what is now New York State, Quebec, and Ontario.
History[edit]
The Mohawk were historically the keepers of the Eastern Door of the Iroquois Confederacy, guarding the confederacy against invasions from the east. They played a significant role in the Beaver Wars and were known for their warrior culture.
Culture[edit]
The Mohawk people have a rich cultural heritage, including traditional practices such as the Longhouse religion, which is a form of Iroquois religion. They are known for their basket weaving, beadwork, and wood carving.
Language[edit]
The Mohawk language is part of the Iroquoian language family. Efforts are being made to revitalize the language through educational programs and community initiatives.
Modern Day[edit]
Today, the Mohawk people live in several communities, including the Kahnawake, Akwesasne, and Tyendinaga reserves. They continue to maintain their cultural traditions while also participating in modern economic activities.
