From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

The Oneida people are a Native American tribe and one of the five founding nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Haudenosaunee. The Oneida originally inhabited the area that is now central New York State, particularly around the Oneida Lake and Oneida County.

History

The Oneida were one of the original members of the Iroquois Confederacy, which was formed to promote peace and cooperation among the member tribes. The Oneida played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War, siding with the United States against the British Empire.

Language

The Oneida speak the Oneida language, which is part of the Iroquoian language family. Efforts are being made to revitalize the language through educational programs and community initiatives.

Culture

The Oneida have a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional crafts, music, and dance. They are known for their wampum belts, which are used in ceremonies and as a means of recording important events and treaties.

Modern Day

Today, the Oneida people are divided into several federally recognized tribes in the United States and Canada. These include the Oneida Indian Nation in New York, the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, and the Oneida Nation of the Thames in Ontario, Canada.
