Mittelschmerz

Mittelschmerz (pronounced MITT-ul-shmurz, /ˈmɪtəlʃmɛərts/) is a medical term used to describe the lower abdominal pain or cramping that occurs in some women during ovulation, which is generally mid-cycle and about two weeks before menstruation. The term "Mittelschmerz" is derived from the German words "Mitte" meaning "middle" and "Schmerz" meaning "pain".

Etymology

The term "Mittelschmerz" was first used in the medical literature in the 19th century. It is derived from the German words "Mitte" (middle) and "Schmerz" (pain), reflecting the timing of the pain in the middle of the menstrual cycle.

Symptoms

Mittelschmerz is characterized by lower abdominal and pelvic pain that occurs roughly midway through a woman's menstrual cycle. The pain can appear suddenly and usually subsides within hours, although it may sometimes last two or three days. In some cases, Mittelschmerz may be accompanied by minor vaginal bleeding or discharge.

Causes

Mittelschmerz occurs during ovulation, when the follicle ruptures and releases its egg. Some women have a sensation of a slight twinge, while others may have a more painful sensation. The exact cause of the pain is not known, but it's thought to be caused by the normal enlargement of the egg in the ovary just before ovulation. It may also be caused by the release of blood or fluid from the ruptured follicle.

Diagnosis

Mittelschmerz is usually diagnosed based on the timing of the pain and the absence of any other problematic symptoms. A pelvic exam may be performed to rule out other conditions. In some cases, an ultrasound may be used to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment for Mittelschmerz is not usually necessary, as the pain is typically mild and goes away on its own. However, in some cases, over-the-counter pain relievers may be recommended. If the pain is severe or persistent, hormonal contraceptives may be used to prevent ovulation and alleviate the pain.
